When Carlos and I were in love, it had been impossible to receive a text and not return another. In fact, busy as that man was, he had always made me feel that I was in the front of his mind. I still had those texts. I never deleted them. One day I counted. There are two thousand four hundred and three of them.

As I lied there after my Friday night shift, which fortunately ended up being fun, I dreamt of Alec who had only hours ago kissed me romantically before getting on a plane. I wondered why he hadn’t returned my text. Knowing it was an hour ahead in NYC, I had texted him before I had left my apartment for work that night, at what I should have been a bit after his arrival time.

Did you make it back safely lover boy?

It was now almost 2:30am. He hadn’t texted back. Surely, even without having prompted him with my message, he would have said something upon landing? Just let me know he was safe? Wasn’t that protocol?

I flopped myself down on my bed backward, dramatically falling onto the duvet. My phone held to my chest, I was too tired to think. So much had happened in the past twenty four hours. So much had happened to my brain and body. Up, down and spinning around the cocktail of drugs was a roller coaster. My heart and head were dizzy.

For the first time in my life, at least as far back as I could remember, I went to sleep without brushing my teeth. And I still had my clothes on.
